Biographical Details

Born in Richmond in 1895 the youngest of five children he enlisted in the 6th Field Artillery in August 1915 and was promoted corporal before embarking on the Persic in November. His mother, Elizabeth Sutton gave her written consent to his enlistment as he was under 20 years of age.He spent three months in Egypt before being sent to the Front where he was soon promoted sergeant. Arth was hospitalised in 1917 with 'flu and phimosis. In September 1918 he suffered mustard gas burns to his ankles and was returned to Australia in December with gas poisoning. Arth was mentioned in Field Marshal Haig's despatches of November 1918. He returned to Launceston and died in 1959.
