Biographical Details

George first enlisted in July 1915 but was discharged as being medically unfit so he tried again in October in Victoria, this time successfully. As a Catholic he was one of the few non-Anglicans on our war memorial. George embarked from Melbourne on the Themistocles in January 1916 and after a few months training in Egypt he arrived in France in June. His war service included work with the anti-aircraft and salvage sections. In April 1918 he was mentioned in despatches from Sir Douglas Haig. George returned to Tasmania in July 1919, married Myrtle Bowles in 1920 and died in Launceston in 1944 aged sixty two.
