Biographical Details
George was a gasfitter at the Launceston Gas Works, married and 23 years old when he enlisted in the 12th Battalion in July 1915. He arrived on the Western Front in April 1916 and was wounded two months later, and again more seriously in April 1917 at Bullecourt when he was buried by a shell-blast and suffered severe internal injuries. He returned to Australia in August 1917 and joined his family in Sydney where he died in 26 June1937. An interesting footnote concerns his brother, Frederick Birnie, who enlisted with George and was killed in action in 1917. Frederick is not recorded on our War Memorial.
