Biographical Details
Robert was born in Boscastle, England in 1891 and came to Australia as a teenager. He was married and working as a shipping clerk when he was commissioned into the 40th Battalion in March 1916. He left Melbourne on the Ulysses and disembarked in Plymouth, UK just before Christmas. He was promoted to Lieutenant in July 1917 when he joined his regiment at the Front. Robert was invalided back to England in December with a hernia but re-joined his regiment in June 1918. He was wounded in action in July, gunshot wound to the left leg and a fractured fibula, which led to him being invalided out of the service. Robert returned to his work as a shipping clerk with CH Smith and died in Launceston in 1968.
