Biographical Details

Our Memorial lists only one Haslam, but there appear to have been 2, father and son.THOMAS HASLAM Senior, (1872 – 1936) was born in 1872 in Derby, UK and migrated to Tasmania in 1886. He was a sanitation engineer but also had some expertise in fruit marketing. He enlisted at Claremont in December 1916 and embarked from Sydney for France in May 1917. At the end of the war he worked at Covent Garden, London while on leave and full pay. On his return to Australia, Thomas became an orchardist at Beauty Point and died in 1936.The younger THOMAS HASLAM (1895 - 1964) was baptised Wilfred Thomas at Holy Trinity and attended Launceston Church Grammar School. He trained as an architect in Sydney and enlisted there in March 1916. He proceeded to the Western Front in November 1916 and was wounded in action in June 1917 and again the following month at Messines where he was buried by a shell attack and suffered severely from shell shock. Thomas returned to Australia in January 1918 and after his marriage in November he returned to work in Sydney. He was living in Adelaide in 1951 and died there in 1964.
