Biographical Details

William was born in Fingal in 1896, one of five brothers who enlisted in the Great War and named on our War Memorial. The family lived at Herbert Street, Invermay and William was a labourer when he enlisted on 2 October 1914 at Claremont. William was wounded in action at Gallipoli, gunshot wounds to the left hand, and was sent to England for convalescence. He fought on the Western Front in 1916/1917 and was sent home on leave in April 1918 returning to Europe in December, by which time hostilities had ended. William was discharged in May 1919 in Australia. We haven’t been able to find any definite information about his post-war years.
