Biographical Details
Herbert was almost 40, married and a wagon builder living in NSW when he enlisted in Newcastle in March 1916. After training in Sydney he left for Europe on the Borda. He was promoted several times to acting positions in England during 1917 and returned to Australia in August 1918 when he was discharged as medically unfit. His records do not appear to show any active service. He returned to the Newcastle area of NSW where he died in 1942. His middle name is spelled 'Morris' on the Memorial but records at the National Archives of Australia show it as 'Maurice'.
