Biographical Details

Herbert enlisted in the 13th Battalion in May 1915 in Liverpool, NSW and joined his unit in Gallipoli on 2 August. He was admitted to hospital in Mudros for a month before returning to the peninsula. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli he transferred to the 45th Battalion before embarking for France. In August 1916 he was wounded in action and transferred to hospital in Birmingham followed by convalescence at Perham Downs. He returned to France in December 1916 and was wounded in action on 16 May 1918, was invalided to England but he died on board the hospital ship on 13 June. He is buried at Netley, Southampton. Herbert was awarded the Military Medal in June 1917.
