Biographical Details

William was nineteen when he enlisted in the 40th Battalion in May 1916. He embarked from Hobart aboard HMTS Ballarat and arrived in Plymouth in September. After a short period of training he proceeded to France. Bouts of mumps, tonsillitis and diphtheria kept him in hospital until April 1917 when he re-joined his regiment. On 7 June 1917 he was killed in action in Belgium and is buried at Menin Gate.
