Biographical Details
William was a twenty six year old labourer when he enlisted at Claremont in the 40th Battalion in May 1916. He embarked for the Front on the Berrima from Hobart on 1 July and after a short time in hospital suffering from influenza he was sent to France and then transferred to the 26th Battalion in February 1917. On 6 May 1917 he was reported killed in action. His body was never found. William's personal effects were to be sent back to his family on the Barunga, but unfortunately the ship was sunk by enemy action. Letter from William's mother Mrs Ellen Hunter thanking the authorities for their trouble in finding out that her son's effects were missing because the vessel they were in was sunk at sea.
