Biographical Details
Born in Launceston, baptised at Holy Trinity and educated at the Grammar School, Maxwell had been a member of the LCGS cadets and the Old Launcestonians Rifle Club. Maxwell enlisted originally in the 6th Field Ambulance Brigade in early 1915 and saw active service in Gallipoli and then in France before transferring to the Australian Flying Corps as a pilot early in 1918. He was reported missing, presumed killed, over France in an aerial battle between five Australian camels and a larger number of German Fokkers on 5 September 1918.
