Biographical Details
Fred was 34 years old when he enlisted in the 15th Battalion in July 1915. His family had migrated to Tasmania from England in 1895 and he was a trainee driver for Southerwood’s coaches to Lefroy. He embarked from Melbourne on the Hororata in September 1915 and after training in Egypt he was fighting on the Western Front in June 1916. He seems to have been a bit of a larrikin as he was charged in August 1917 for allowing his horse to trot on the pavement at Lindenhoek Road. Fred returned to Australia in May 1919 and worked for Perrins, Launceston where he died in 1967.
