Biographical Details
Born in 1900, Hedley enlisted, underage, as Hedley Brown born in the UK, in the 12th Battalion at Melbourne in December 1916. He embarked on the Persic arriving Devonport, UK in March 1917. After four months training he proceeded to France where he was wounded in action. He re-joined his unit in October and on 9 April 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. A month later Hedley was wounded again and this necessitated his return to Australia and discharge in October 1918. He lived in South Australia where he lectured in accountancy and worked for the government railways. In WW2 he rose to the rank of major and was mentioned in despatches. He died in Launceston.
