Biographical Details
John was born in Launceston and baptised at Holy Trinity. He had just completed a four year apprenticeship as a cabinet maker at Coogans before enlisting on 12 April 1915. He left Australia in June and joined his regiment, the 26th Battalion in Gallipoli on 4 September. A fortnight later he was severely wounded in action with gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen and lungs. He died three days later on the hospital ship Dunluce Castle and was buried at sea. In 1933 his mother paid for a chancel screen to be erected in his memory at St. George’s, Invermay.
