Roy was a carpenter when he enlisted in the 26th Battalion on 29 April 1915. He saw action towards the end of the Gallipoli campaign before being sent to France in March 1916. Roy received severe shrapnel wounds at Bapaume on 14 March 1917 and was sent to hospital in London with convalescence in Weymouth. He suffered bouts of chronic catarrh and adenoid problems before re-joining his unit. On 3 October 1918 he was conspicuous in his actions at Beauvoir, St Quentin for which he was awarded the Military Medal but he was also severely wounded. Invalided to Australia, attempts were made to clear up the damage to his head and brain but he gradually grew weaker and died at the Hornsey Hospital, Launceston on 29 July 1919 and received a military funeral.
