Biographical Details
John was a twenty year old store assistant at Forster's in Avoca when he enlisted in the 12th Battalion in August 1914. Two months later he embarked from Hobart for Egypt where he underwent initial training. His war records do not indicate whether he was a Gallipoli veteran but he was admitted to hospital with influenza and a hernia in August 1915 and was transferred to England for convalescence. He re-joined his unit in Egypt before proceeding to France in April 1916. John was killed in action at Moquet Farm on 22 August 1916. It is rather poignant that John's war photograph is the only one of our group that has been hand coloured.
