Biographical Details

Jack was the first from Holy Trinity to enlist in 1915. He was twenty three and living at Gunn Street, a wire-weaver having completed an apprenticeship with Henry Bills of Inveresk. He embarked for Egypt on 19 April 1915 and within five weeks was fighting at Gallipoli. He was wounded at the battle of Sari Bair in August and sent to hospital in Egypt. He embarked for the Western Front in June 1916 and fought with the 52nd and 51st Battalions and was one of the ‘lucky ones’ not to have been wounded. Jack returned to Tasmania in June 1919 and was living at Esk Street when he applied in 1968 for his Anzac medallion. He died in Launceston in 1970.
