Biographical Details

Tom was a chair maker, born in Ulverstone in 1896. He enlisted under the name of James Collings on 5 September 1914 and embarked with the 12th Battalion from Hobart on the Geelong on 20 October. Tom contracted severe dysentery while at Lemnos and was admitted to hospital in London. He re-joined his regiment in France in August 1916 and saw active service throughout 1917 and 1918. In June 1918 he got into trouble by breaking censorship regulations - mentioning his location and address in a private letter! He returned to Australia in 1919, married and moved to Adelaide where he died in June1931 aged only 35.
