Biographical Details

Willie was born in 1890 in Suffolk, UK and when he enlisted at Claremont in August 1915 he was described as a tram conductor, married with one child. He was only just over five feet in height making him the shortest of our servicemen. After training at Broadmeadows, Willie embarked for the Western Front in May 1916. He was wounded in action on two occasions before returning to Australia in November 1918 and his former job working on the Launceston trams. He died in 1979.
