Biographical Details

Claude was born in Strahan in 1894 but the family moved to Inverness where his father was the licensee of the Park Hotel. Claude trained as a telegraph fitter and enlisted in August 1915 in the 6th Field Artillery. He embarked for France from Melbourne on the Persic and arrived at the Front in March 1916. Claude was promoted corporal and then sergeant in 1918. In October 1918 he suffered from a mustard gas attack and after recuperating in England he was returned to Australia where he took up his former employment. Claude died in 1972 aged 78 years.
