Biographical Details

Mervyn was born in 1892 and grew up in Mowbray. He was a carpenter and had been a member of the cadet forces for four years before he enlisted in the 3rd Artillery Brigade at Pontville on 31 August 1914. He embarked for Egypt on the Katuna six weeks later and was to see active service in Gallipoli and the Western Front before being invalided to England in early 1917 with trench fever, debility and laryngitis. Later in the year he was returned to Australia and discharged in Hobart. After the war he and his brothers established a produce company in Devonport where he lived until his death in 1978. Mervyn's war record, photographs and other memorabilia were a feature of the World War 1 exhibition at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.
